Addition to Rachel Carson NWR Could Be Lost Without Additional Funds

The Portland Press Herald is reporting that a 97-acre parcel of conservation land — slated for addition to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Maine — could be lost if officials and conservationists can’t raise the remaining $1.6 million needed to acquire the land.

Vandals Strike Iroquois NWR in New York

WIVB.com in New York reports that vandals struck the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, removing ten interpretive panels, overturning a bench and port-a-jobs, and removing signs in a parking lot. The damage was estimated at $15,000.
The Friends of Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge have offered a reward of $500 for information leading to an arrest and conviction [...]

Teacher Donates $1500 to Friends of Ridgefield NWR

The Columbian in Washington state reports that Heather Johnston, a Firm Foundation Christian School fourth-grade teacher, who won 2nd place in the Small Steps for Big Change national teacher environmental awards, has decided to donate her award to the Friends of Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.

Forsythe NWR Visitor Center Opening

The Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey has a new Visitor Information Center, which just had its official opening on Saturday. The beautiful $1.2 million structure replaces a 28-year-old building, and it will be staffed by volunteers with the Friends of Forsythe.
