Breton NWR Closed Due to BP Oil Spill

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that Breton National Wildlife Refuge is now closed to public entry after confirmation that a silver sheen and emulsified oil had reached the shoreline. This closure includes the Chandeleur Island chain (Chandeleur, Grand Gossier, Curlew, New Harbor Island, North Islands, Free Mason).

The USFWS says the closure is to ensure public safety, protect nesting seabirds, and allow cleanup crews to work safely and efficiently.

They also report that one live oiled pelican was recovered by Service field team. No oil was seen on the pelican nesting islands protected by booms. Skimming operations to recover the emulsified oil on Breton had limited success.

The USFWS has also posted a fact sheet called Effects of Oil on Wildlife and Habitat (PDF 1.3MB).
