Turtle/Fish Poacher Caught at Shiawassee NWR
Mlive.com reports that officials from the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge and from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources caught a turtle and fish poacher who was removing painted turtles, snapping turtles, largemouth bass and channel catfish from near the refuge’s Green Point Environmental Learning Center.
According to Mlive.com:
Officials said they received several reports that a man was collecting the wildlife, and security cameras at Green Point captured a person using nets, buckets and fishing gear.
The big break in the case came when DNR officials received an anonymous tip about animals being kept in the man’s cellar.
The Saginaw man was caught and fined $775 in citations.
Shiawassee NWR is located near Saginaw and includes 9,501 acres of bottomland hardwood forests, rivers, marshes, managed pools, fields and croplands. Located in the Mississippi Flyway, the refuge hosts over 270 species of birds each year. Thousands of ducks, geese and other waterfowl stop to refuel at the refuge during the spring and fall migration. The American Birding Association has designated the refuge an “Important Bird Area.”
