Refuge Friends Urge Action to Protect Wildlife from Climate Change

The National Wildlife Refuge Association and almost 110 refuge Friends volunteer organizations across the country are urging the Senate to pass climate change legislation that would reduce greenhouse gasses and dedicate a portion of the future revenue collected to aid wildlife in adapting to climate change.

On September 11, 2001, Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge Manager Rich Guadagno was aboard hijacked United Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, killing all aboard. Rich had just finished a visit with his family on the East Coast and was on his way back to Humboldt in California.

Duck Stamp Money Goes Toward Land Acquisition

The Department of Interior announced yesterday that the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission approved the expenditure of nearly $8 million in Federal Duck Stamp funds to add more than 4,000 wetland acres to seven units of the National Wildlife Refuge System. According to the DOI:

Refuges on “America the Beautiful” Quarters

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is reporting that 50 Department of Interior sites have been selected for the “America the Beautiful” Quarters Program. According to the USFWS:

Judge Halts Drilling at Baca NWR

The Associated Press is reporting that a federal judge has blocked exploratory oil and gas drilling at Baca National Wildlife Refuge, which is close to the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.
U.S. District Court Judge Walker Miller stated that environmental groups gave compelling evidence that drilling would cause harm to the refuge.
