Fire at Great Dismal Swamp NWR

Great Dismal Swamp NWRThe Associated Press and WAVY TV is reporting that 250 firefighters are working to contain a fire that is in the Virginia portion of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which has portions in both Virginia and North Carolina.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that as of this weekend, the fire has burned about 1,575 acres. About 20% of the fire has been contained but it has damaged parts of a project that was attempting to restore Atlantic white cedar trees.

The Great Dismal Swamp NWR is located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The refuge consists of over 111,000 acres of forested wetlands. Lake Drummond, at 3,100 acres and the largest natural lake in Virginia, is located in the heart of the swamp.
